Module 1: Introduction to Filmmaking

1. Overview of Filmmaking

  • Objective: Understand the basics of filmmaking and the role of a filmmaker.
  • Topics:
    • What is filmmaking? Understanding the process.
    • The stages of film production: Pre-production, Production, Post-production.
    • Roles and responsibilities in a film crew.

2. Film Language and Visual Storytelling

  • Objective: Learn the fundamentals of visual storytelling and film grammar.
  • Topics:
    • Shots, angles, and composition.
    • Storyboarding basics.
    • Visual continuity and shot selection.

3. Screenwriting and Story Development

  • Objective: Understand how to create a compelling story for film.
  • Topics:
    • Developing a concept and writing a logline.
    • Basics of screenplay structure (three-act structure).
    • Writing dialogue and creating characters.

4. Pre-Production Planning

  • Objective: Learn how to plan a film effectively.
  • Topics:
    • Script breakdown and creating a shot list.
    • Casting and finding talent.
    • Location scouting and set preparation.

5. Camera Techniques and Cinematography

  • Objective: Learn how to operate the camera and create the desired look.
  • Topics:
    • Camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO).
    • Choosing lenses and understanding depth of field.
    • Lighting techniques and using natural vs. artificial light.

6. Directing for Film

  • Objective: Understand the role of a director in guiding the creative vision.
  • Topics:
    • Working with actors to elicit natural performances.
    • Blocking scenes and directing the camera.
    • Creating and maintaining the mood of a scene.

7. Sound Design and Recording

  • Objective: Learn the basics of capturing high-quality audio.
  • Topics:
    • Different types of microphones (boom, lavalier, shotgun).
    • Techniques for capturing dialogue and ambient sound.
    • Sound continuity and basic mixing.

8. Production Phase

  • Objective: Apply skills in a real-world shoot.
  • Topics:
    • Managing a film shoot (scheduling, time management).
    • Communicating with the crew.
    • Troubleshooting common on-set problems.

9. Editing and Post-Production

  • Objective: Learn the basics of editing and finishing a film.
  • Topics:
    • Importing footage and organizing media.
    • Editing sequences, cutting to improve pacing.
    • Adding transitions, music, and sound effects.
    • Introduction to color correction and visual effects.

10. Sound Editing and Music Scoring

  • Objective: Enhance storytelling through sound and music.
  • Topics:
    • Basics of sound editing and foley.
    • Adding background score to influence mood.
    • Syncing music with video.

11. Exporting and Distribution

  • Objective: Understand how to finish and share your film.
  • Topics:
    • Export settings for different platforms (theater, online).
    • Uploading to YouTube, Vimeo, or film festivals.
    • Basics of film marketing and distribution strategies.

12. Final Project: Making a Short Film

  • Objective: Create a complete short film from concept to final cut.
  • Topics:
    • Collaborating in small groups to create a short film.
    • Applying pre-production, production, and post-production skills.
    • Screening and group critique of final projects.

This course module provides a structured path to learn the complete filmmaking process. It helps participants understand not only the technical aspects but also the creative decisions involved in bringing a film to life, allowing for hands-on experience in every phase of filmmaking.

CORE MODULES

  • Ideation and storytelling. Learn how to develop creative stories and ideas across a number of formats, documentaries, factual television, web series and feature films. You shall gain sense to identify your target audience and adapt your ideas to the appropriate screen platform.
  • Character and performance. Learn various techniques for how to shape and build character and performance across a variety of platforms, which includes TV drama, documentaries and even online entertainment series. Working with a variety of actors will make you expertise in delivering your story from paper to screen.
  • Image and sound. Learn the use of camera, lighting, and sound to create visual and sound effects that brings life to stories such as romance, comedy, fictional scripts of  documentaries and episodic productions. You will develop strong technical skills and explore the impact of image and sound on a creative screen content.
  • Post Production. Discover the creativity and technicality of being a part of post production. Workflows that includes editing, sound designing and sound effects, visual effects and also color grading.  You will learn how post production skills are central to the storytelling process across film, television and new media.
  • Screen Business. Learn how to market and distribute screen content across a range of media platforms, including filmmaking, television and new media platforms available. Alongside the practical skills you will gain on this course, will also teach you how  creative industries work and how one can become a smart screen creative artiest that will be attractive to industry employers. In addition, you will learn the art of  managing the productions, create fruitful projects of your own and also, to work collaboratively with creative groups.

  • Scriptwriting– Stories are one of the major forms of connecting with a massive group of people. It helps us connect and make a great impact on people across the globe. We at Puppets Picture Academy assure to make our students ideate and plan deeply about it.
  • Acting– Acting of a person is how much the viewers are able to feel the character and are able to connect with it. We teach our students to engross themselves completely into different characters and be able to live them as much as possible.
  • Directing– Director has always been identified as someone that requires leadership qualities in himself/herself. So here we are, to make sure we work upon building their character, make them understand that they need to know widely of all the aspects of filmmaking as they need to direct and manage the team.
  • Cinematography– Cinematographer is someone that brings all the efforts of script writer, actor, director, sound manager and producer’s efforts to life. He/she needs to have a thorough knowledge about camera angles. That is what we at Puppets Picture do, we provide the students with knowledge about camera angles and smart tricks to work efficiently.
  • Sound Management-Sounds and Music are a great form of connectivity it helps in creating great interest in movies. We educate our students with knowledge about sounds and music, how the work at different levels and forms and how they help us bring motions into life.
  • Production– Producer is person that needs to be there for everything. He plans and coordinates different aspects of film production such as selecting script, coordinating at writing, direction, editing etc. We assure our students to have through knowledge of all the aspects of film production and help them improve their sense of selection.
  • Editing– As long as we know how to play with the technology, we shall keep providing the world with great work. Editing doesn’t always refer to colour correction. It Includes editing a video, sound or a photo. Editing also includes adding visual graphics or animation in the video or photo. We teach our students the highest level of creativity and make sure they are able to make the best use of their capabilities.

We at Puppets Picture make sure to leave no stone unturned when it comes to creativity, we provide our students with the best possible equipments and help them unleash their creativity.

We help the students begin working on cameras like Canon EOS 5D, R5C, R6, R7, 700D, then help them get their hands on further more professional cameras like the Canon C300, Black Magic 4K Cinema Camera. Puppets Picture Academy  guide it’s students to work on industry-standard sound and lighting kit also teach them the necessary skills to operate with a coordinated crew and make them learn and manage the production process. We educate our students about the importance of working on films within certain production budget and why it’s necessary to do so.

We make sure to develop an environment which helps in the nourishment of the student’s professional growth. Our Production Head is always available to provide any assistance to the students anytime they require.

Progression

Depending on the field that the student wish to specializes in, we help each one of them to progressing  in certain fields like direction, cinematography, photography, sound artists etc. Students may also start working as freelancers whilst they complete their course.
